Mijas Golf
Mijas Golf is a well established area with two 18 hole golf courses (Los Olivos and Los Lagos with
its 'old farmhouse' clubhouse) surrounding the famous Byblos Hotel. Both 18 hole courses were designed by Robert Trent-Jones Snr. Los Lagos is the older of the two courses and was opened in 1976. They
both feature wide fairways and large greens and the course conditions are always very good.
In the immediate vicinity there are four other golf courses. The apartment overlooks the 3rd tee on Los Lagos and the front terrace has spectacular mountain views and olive groves. And of course, you are right in the middle of the 'Costa del Golf' with over 30 golf courses within a 30 minute drive. A real golfer's paradise.
Golf Courses
Alcaidesa Links
Alcaidesa Links, Spain's first links course designed by Peter Allis, has hosted Andalucian PGA and Spanish PGA Championships. Three holes run alongside the Med providing views of
Gibraltar.
Alhaurin
Designed by Steve Ballesteros, the course is built in the hills close to the Mijas village. As a result, the course is up and down, but is in superb condition with magnificent views over the coast.
Atalaya Golf
Two 18 hole courses, both situated on relatively flat terrain with fairways lined with eucalyptus and pines. Excellent practice facilities and a superb Swiss chalet style clubhouse.
El Paraiso
An 18 hole championship course designed by Gary Player. The lush fairways are crossed by meandering streams and lakes, home to many
water birds and golf balls of the unwary!
Guadalmina
The second oldest club on the Costa del Sol and offering two 18 hole courses. It hosted the PGA European Tour qualifying school in 1998.
Guadalhorce
The front nine holes are on mainly flat terrain, but with difficult rough. The back nine have a more American style layout with lakes, tropical vegetation and large raised greens.
La Cala Golf & Country Club
Two 18 hole courses, a David Leadbetter Golf Academy and magnificent clubhouse facilities. Set in spectacular undulating terrain, both courses are a challenge to golfers of all levels.
La Duquesa Golf & Country Club
This Trent-Jones Snr designed course winds its way around El Hacho beacon hill and provides stunning views of the Med. Extensive practice facilities.
La Quinta Golf & Country Club
Known as Marbella's 'Little Augusto' due to its well manicured presentation, flowers, shrubs and water. Has
it's own academy under the direction of Manuel Pinero, the club's touring professional.
Los Arqueros
The first Ballesteros designed course on the coast, set in the mountains on the road to Ronda. The layout is breathtaking, but quite up and down.
Los Narangos
Another Trent-Jones course, takes its name from the groves of orange trees through which the back nine is played. A par of 72 with an SSS of 74 makes this a challenging and exciting course.
Marbella Fairways
Opened in 1994, this par 71 course is one of the most exciting new courses recently designed by Robert Trent-Jones. It uses the rolling Andalucian hillside to provide a testing but enjoyable round of golf.
Mijas – Los Lagos & Los Olivos
Encircling the Club House, an Andalucian farmhouse, both Trent-Jones courses give the impression of wide open spaces. This is an illusion. Watch out for sand – 97 traps on Lagos alone – and water. Further information can be obtained on the Mijas Golf web site.
Monte Mayor
Nestling in the mountains of Benahavvis, this is Andalucia's most spectacular golf course. The long 4th hole has tees from which the drive must land on an isolated platform and the second shot aimed at another. Green fee includes buggy hire.
Parador de Malaga del Golf
The oldest course on the coast – designed by Tom Simpson of Turnberry and Muirfield renown. Hosted the Turespana Masters Open de Andalucia, won by Vijay Singh in 1992. Flat wide tree-lined fairways – home to flocks of parakeets.
Rio Real
Opened in 1965, this well established course is intersected on various points by the river, Rio Real. The spectacular 11th tee looks down to a green across the Rio Real.
San Roque
One of the most exciting clubs in Europe, designed by David Thomas and Tony Jacklin – costing an alleged $1million a hole to construct. The
winter home of the PGA European Tour School.
Santa Maria
Two quite distinct nine holes, tracing the contours of two valleys heading inland from the coast. Excellent practice facilities featuring the Diego Monito Golf School.
Torrequebrada
Host to several top tournaments including the 1997 Spanish Open. An undulating course with plenty of trees, lakes and bunkers.
Valderrama
Officially voted Europe's No. 1 golf course and host to the 1992 Ryder Cup. This is one of the
continent's toughest challenges. A must for serious, low handicap golfers, who savour the challenge.
